The Pros and Cons of Bake Sale Fundraisers

Pros and Cons of Bake Sales

Bakes sales are one of the most common fundraisers for organizations of every size. These events are fun for the community and usually yield a decent profit. However, there are many complications to consider such as food allergies and coordinating a successful location. So, before you plan your next bake sale, consider the following pros and cons:

PRO: 100% Profit

Since all of the baked goods are donated, the profit margin for baked sales is 100%. This means you get every cent! (Minus a possible street vendor permit fee.)

CON: Small Profits

While the entire proceeds of the bake sale go back to the school or organization, these profits are tiny in comparison to larger fundraiser programs, such as catalogs and auctions.

PRO: Parent Involvement Required

Looking to get parents involved in the school? Bake sales are a fun and easy way for parents to contribute to their child’s school. In addition to being fun to sell, baked goods are fun for the whole family to make!

CON: Requires a Lot of Organization with the Community

You may need to acquire a permit and/or permission from a local business in order to set up shop. Also, carefully consider the safety of the location you choose. Is it a busy street corner with lots of high-speed traffic? Or does it get more pedestrian traffic? An ideal location is one that is far enough from dangerous intersections and still receives a good amount of foot traffic.

PRO: Seasonal Sensations

Remember that sweet, spiced smell of pumpkin pie in October? What about the cinnamon of your mom’s Christmas bunt cakes? The smell of seasonal baked goods evoke memories of our favorite occasions. Bake sales can be extremely successful if we cater to these seasonal foods.

CON: Common Allergies and Nutrition

It’s important to consider that gluten and nut allergies are becoming increasingly common today. This is extremely important to consider when children are involved and possibly unaware of the contents of their baked goods. Be sure you know exactly what is in each item, and provide clear labels for foods containing nuts, wheat, and other common allergy items. In addition, consider offering vegan and low-sugar goods for people with special dietary needs such as diabetics and those who are lactose intolerant.

PRO: Cooperation with Other Organizations

A great way to get other organizations or groups on board with your bake sale is to schedule it during a community event. If the middle school is having a carnival, ask for permission to sell baked goods during this event. Sporting events draw a lot of people, and even something as simple as a garage sale can be a great co-operative event for you and other sellers.

CON: Often Percieved as the Same Old Thing

One of the toughest problems with bake sales is that they are often seen as boring. To overcome this attitude, offer exciting and different items such as beverages and recipes with the rest of the standard bake sale items.

And remember, there are a lot of different fundraisers out there, so be sure to look at the best possible option available for your organization or school.
